While only twenty miles south of the sprawling resort of Hurghada, the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh is a world away in exclusivity, with low sand coloured, marble faced, buildings set in the 48 acres of grounds that overlook the private beach.
‘Sippor smiff,’ Mohammed kept saying as he ushered us into our Grand Suite, but it took some time for us to understand that earlier in the day he had ushered Sir Paul Smith out of it. By that time my two daughters who were supposedly meant to be in the adjoining Deluxe Suite had discovered the pleasures of our private pool, and while the lazier one arranged for Mohammed to collect us for dinner in one of the hotel’s golf buggies, her sister booked herself into the Banyan run spa for a Thai massage at my expense.
A choice of two restaurants and a third by the pool offer mouth-watering, traditional Middle Eastern and Indian cuisine with the attentive service that characterises the whole resort. Besides the Spa there is a well equipped gym to work off the calories gained, although we found it difficult to shift from that lovely outdoor pool.
The resort has a dive centre on site which offers a range of water-sports, and although we are not divers we really enjoyed the snorkelling off the beach.
For such an oasis of peace and relaxation, I was impressed by how well young children were catered for, with an activity centre to keep them amused and baby-sitting offered by professional young staff. And children of all ages, like my youngest teenage daughter, come to expect a level of turn down service and cold towels with her poolside drinks that her parents will rue for some time.
There are 63 Deluxe and 21 Superior Deluxe Suites with twelve larger Grand Suites with private pools, and six Royal Suites with separate living room, guest bathroom, pool and outdoor dining pavilion overlooking the sea. All share the same high level of room service, and all those little extras that count, like the daily flower arrangement, which make you feel so well looked after.
